938 HISTORY OF CAMBRIA COUNTY

    Rev. Dezidery P. Zubritzky is well and favorably known in Portage, where he is pastor of Sts. Peter and Paul Greek Catholic Church. He was born at Abod, Hungary, July 3, 1886, and is the son of Nicholas and Emma (Kovalicky) Zubritzky.
    Rev. Nicholas Zubritzky was born in Hungary and was the first Greek Catholic priest sent to the United States. He served at Kingston Pa., during the years 1886 and 1887, after which he returned to h is native land, where he died in 1891. His wife died there in 1890. Their only child was Rev. Dezidery P., the subject of this sketch.
    Rev. Dezidery P. Zubritzky received his education in Eperjes, Hungary, and was ordained in 1910 at Kany, Hungary. After coming to the United States Reverend Zubritzky served as pastor of St. John's Church, Pittsburgh, for three years and in 1919 was transferred to Portage. He has erected a fine new church and a monastery during his pastorate at Portage, and has been very successful in his work.
    In 1917 Father Zubritzky founded the St. Peter and Paul Greek Church at Portage, Pa., with a family of 300 members. In 1919 the church and residence were built by him at a cost of about $40,000.
    Father Zubritzky was married Oct. 25, 1910, in Hungary, top Jizella Kendrovszky, and five children have been born to them as follows: Paul, Alexandria, Clara, Dezidery and Sarah.




    George W. Samsel is a representative young business man of Portage, where he is engaged in the drug business. He was born at Flemington, N. J., Aug, 12, 1891, and is the son of John and Matilda (Hillpot) Samsel.
    John Samsel was born in Bucks County, Pa., in 1858, and died in January, 1919. He had lived as Stroudsburg, Pa., for many years, where he was employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad as a passenger conductor. His widow resides at Stroudsburg. Mr. and Mrs. Samsel had five children: Clarence W., lives in Philadelphia; Arthur H., died at the age of 27 years; George W., the subject of this sketch: Hugh E., died while in the navy while in service during the World War; and Mrs. Florence K. Hallock, lives at Stroughburg.
    George W. Samsel received his early education in the public schools of Belvidere, N. J., and in 1915 was graduated from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. He remained in Stroudsburg until 1918, when he pur-
