chased the drug business of Maurice Luther. Mr. Samsel is a prescription specialist and owns one of the leading drug stores in the city.
    On Aug. 27, 1914, Mr. Samsel was married to Miss Ruth K. Decker of Stroudsburg, the daughter of John M. and Susan B. (Brown) Decker. They have one child, Clementine, born Jan. 29, 1918.
    Mr. Samsel is a member of the United Brethren Church, Masonic Lodge, Ebensburg, and Knight of Pythias. He is a Republican and is actively interested in all city athletics, including football and basketball.




    James G. Hewitt, deceased, was a substantial and highly respected citizen. He was born at Morris Run, and spent his entire life in Pennsylvania, where he was employed in the mines. He died n Punxsutawney, Pa., in 1900, and is buried at that place.
    Mr. Hewitt married Miss Elizabeth Dunsmore, on Dec. 18, 1889. She is the daughter of Douglas B. and Matilda (Hunter) Dunsmore, natives of Scotland. Mr. Dunsmore was born in 1848 and died in 1915. His wife was born in 1854 and died in 1908. They had the following children: Elizabeth Hewitt, Douglas J., James, and Robert B., all of Portage; Mrs. John Fetters, lives at Jerome, Pa; and Alexander. Mr. Dunsmore was for many years a mine superintendent and one of the men whose history is closely connected with the development of the bituminous coal fields of Pennsylvania. He was a 32nd degree Mason and belonged to the Knights of Pythias.
    To James G. and Elizabeth (Dunsmore) Hewitt two children were born: Maud, married Edwin T. Short, mention of whom is made below; and George Raymond. George Raymond Hewitt was born June 18, 1892, in Clearfield County, Pa. He is now a miner living in Portage. During the World War he enlisted in the army and saw service abroad. He married Mable Shaw, of Portage.
    Edwin T. Short, assistant cashier of the Miners & Merchants Bank, Portage, was born at Lilly, Pa., Oct. 27, 1892, the son of James McCellan and Ellen (Mulhern) Short, both deceased.
    James McClellan Short was born at Altoona, Pa., in 1861, and died in 1922. He was actively engaged in the hotel business at Lilly for several years. His wife was born in Ireland and died in 1914. Mr. and Mrs. Short had the following children: Edwin T.; Margaret, married Dr. W. S. Daugherty, lives at Portage; Anna, married Clay Schull, lives at Portage.
