farms of 125 acres each. In 1917 Mr. Bowser sold his farms and removed to Portage, where he established his general mercantile business, at 1011 Main Street.
    On Feb. 13, 1899, Mr. Bowser was married at Blue Knob, Pa., to Miss Della Diehl, a native of that place, the daughter of Aaron and Catherine (Inler) Diehl. Mr. Diehl died in 1909 and his widow died in 1914. To Mr. and Mrs. Bowser the following children were born: Pearl, married Roy Corle, lives at Altoona, Pa., Rena, married Harold Keller, lives at Altoona, and they have three children, Miriam, John William, and Mirvin; George, married Elmira Hampton, has a child, Virginia, and they live at Portage; Mary, married Lewis Schlehr, lives at Altoona, and they have three children, Richard, Leona, and David; Ruby, married William Drobeck, lives at Eldorado, Ill., and they have two children, William, Jr., and Donald; Eleanor, married Samuel Hampton, lives at Detroit, Mich., and they have two children, Samuel, Jr., and Doris; Ivan, Kenneth, and Alden, all students; and Lulu deceased.
    Mr. Bowser and his family are members of the United Brethren Church and he is affiliated with the Knights of Malta.




    I. E. Carman, president of the First National Bank of Lilly, is a representative citizen of Cambria County. He was born at Portland Mills, Pa., Sept. 14, 1868, and is the son of Hiram and Elizabeth A. (Wescott) Carman.
    Hiram Carman was born in Livingston County, N. Y., in 1836. For a number of years he engaged in the lumber business and was later superintendent of the clarion River Railroad, a branch of the Pittsburgh Railroad. He died in 1892 and is buried at Ridgeway, Pa. Mr. Carman was a member of the Episcopal Church and a 32nd degree Mason. He served as town commissioner of Elk County, Pa., was a member of the school board and justice of the peace. His wife was born in Elk County and died in 1920 at the age of 83 years. To Mr. and Mrs. Carman the following children were born: Lucy, deceased, was the wife of Brink Mahoney; Flora A., H. A., and Carrie, who live at Ridgeway, Pa.; I. E., the subject of this sketch; W. W. lives in California, and Harry, deceased.
    I. E. Carman was educated in the schools of Portland Mills and until 1903 was a locomotive engineer for the Portland Lumber Company. In 1903 he came to Lilly, where he engaged in the wholesale liquor business
