farms of 125 acres each. In 1917 Mr. Bowser sold his farms and removed to Portage, where he established his general mercantile business, at 1011 Main Street. I. E. Carman, president of the First National Bank of Lilly, is a representative citizen of Cambria County. He was born at Portland Mills, Pa., Sept. 14, 1868, and is the son of Hiram and Elizabeth A. (Wescott) Carman. Hiram Carman was born in Livingston County, N. Y., in 1836. For a number of years he engaged in the lumber business and was later superintendent of the clarion River Railroad, a branch of the Pittsburgh Railroad. He died in 1892 and is buried at Ridgeway, Pa. Mr. Carman was a member of the Episcopal Church and a 32nd degree Mason. He served as town commissioner of Elk County, Pa., was a member of the school board and justice of the peace. His wife was born in Elk County and died in 1920 at the age of 83 years. To Mr. and Mrs. Carman the following children were born: Lucy, deceased, was the wife of Brink Mahoney; Flora A., H. A., and Carrie, who live at Ridgeway, Pa.; I. E., the subject of this sketch; W. W. lives in California, and Harry, deceased. I. E. Carman was educated in the schools of Portland Mills and until 1903 was a locomotive engineer for the Portland Lumber Company.
