1887; William, died in 1892; Elizabeth, died in 1887; and Daniel, died in November, 1924. George Rainey, who is successfully engaged in the lumber business, is among the enterprising business men of Lilly. He was born here, Dec. 22, 1871, and is the son of Joseph and Mary Jane (Brown) Rainey. Joseph Rainey, deceased, was a prominent citizen of Cambria County and a veteran of the Civil War. He was born in a farm in Washington Township, the son of John Rainey, who was born in Clearfield county, Pa., and settled in Cambria County about 1837. He was a farmer and also engaged in railroad building on the old Portage road. Joseph, his son, was a carpenter and also engaged in the contracting and building business, establishing the present Rainey Lumber Company at Lilly. He also owned a general store here. Mr. Rainey died in 1912. He was active in the affairs of Lilly and served as justice of the peace, school director, and a member of the council. During the Civil War he served with Company A, 55th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He was a life long member of the Catholic Church. His wife, Mary Jane Brown, was born near Lilly and died in 1894 at the age of 54 years. To Mr. and Mrs. Rainey nine children were born, four of whom are deceased: Anna, Lavina, Mary and Harry.
