Henry, Sophia, Clair, Monica, Raymond, Fidelis, Elizabeth and Modestus, all deceased. Richard Bland, who is successfully engaged in the insurance business at Cresson, is among the enterprising business men of Cambria County. He was born in England, Dec. 6, 1873, and is a son of Gathorne and Sarah (Delaney) Bland. Gathorne Bland was born in England in 1847. He was a miner and died in England in 1925. His wife was born in 1853 and died in 1894. To Mr. and Mrs. Bland the following children were born: Richard, the subject of this sketch; William, lives in England; and Matthew D., lives at Schenectady, N. Y. At an early age Richard Brand [sic] came to the United States and settled at Philipsburg, Pa., where he entered the mines. He was employed in various capacities and for several years was identified with the Henrietta Coal Company, Westmoreland County, Pa. He later became foreman for the Pennsylvania Coal and Coke Company at Gallitzin. Mr. Bland was then transferred to Cresson as superintendent of the transportation system of the Pennsylvania Coal and Coke Company, in charge of 81 mines. He served in this capacity until December, 1920, when he became superintendent of the Navy Smokeless Coal Company of Carrolltown, with whom he was identified for three years. He is now agent for the Standard Life Insurance Company at Cresson. On June 21, 1893, Mr. Bland was united in marriage with Miss Harriet Louise North, a daughter of Christopher and Sarah North, both deceased. To them the following children were bon: William; Sarah, was wife of Clifton Seeley, deceased; Gathorne, married Grace Sullivan, lives at Cresson; Christopher, deceased; Ada, married Mack Gerow, lives at Knoxville, Pa.; Ella, deceased; and Richard, at home. |
