a member of the naval mail service between England and Germany. Mr. and Mrs. McGuire have no children.
    Politically Mr. McGuire is a Democrat. He is a member of the Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. He has always taken a keen interest in the affairs of his community and is highly esteemed.
    The log cabin near Loretto, in Cambria County, was erected in 1782 by Capt. Michael McGuire, who served under George Washington during the Revolution. He was one of the earliest settles of this section, where he owned 2,000 acres of land. His son, Luke McGuire was the father of George L. McGuire, father of the subject of this sketch. Another son, Capt. Richard McGuire, served throughout the War of 1812.




    V. T. Abel is well and favorably known in Hastings, where he is identified with the Pine Valley Coal Company as president and general manager. He was born on a farm near Hastings, Nov. 5 1880, and is a son of Henry and Margaret (Glasser) Abel.
    Henry Abel, deceased, was a prominent pioneer of Cambria County. He was born in Germany on Nov. 2, 1824, and in 1852 emigrated to the United States and settled on land three miles north of Hastings. He purchased 128 acres of land and became a prosperous farmer and breeder of heavy draft horses. He was an expert horseman. He died in January 1901. Before coming to America Mr. Able served in the German army and was a member of the Emperor's body guard. He was a member of the Catholic Church, served for many years as a school director in Elder Township, and in politics was a Democrat. He is buried at St. Boniface, Cambria County. His first wife, Elizabeth (Yahner) Abel, died in 1864. To this union six children were born: John, Hastings, Pa.; Barbara, wife of Jacob Leiden, both deceased; Mary, wife of William Warner, St Lawrence, Pa.; Joseph, who located in the state of Washington in 1889, died in 1905; Theresa, wife of Phillip Kibler, St. Lawrence, Pa., and Paul, who died in infancy.
    In 1865, Mr. Able married to Miss Margaret Glasser, who was born at Bethlehem, Pa., and who died in October 1921. To them eleven children were born, as follows: Emma, wife of George Gearhart, of Thomas Mills, Pa.; Regina, in religion known as Sister Mary Thias, Sisters of Mercy, Pittsburgh, Pa.; Martha, wife of Edward Waltz, of Graterford, Pa.; Agnes, wife of C. X. Miller, Hastings, Pa.; Elizabeth, who died at the
