age of four years; Phillip B., a member of the Christian Brothers, Oakland, Calif; Peter C., of Norristown, Pa.; Frank J., of Hastings, Pa.; Edward W., of Ashville, Pa.,; V. T. Abel, the subject of this sketch; and Anna, twin sister of V. T. Abel, who died at the age of 36 years. Rev. Alfred Nugent Samwell, rector of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Barnesboro, is a prominent citizen of Cambria County. He was born at Edinburgh, Scotland, Feb. 3, 1880, the son of Col. Frank and Sarah (Nugent) Samwell. Col. Frank Samwell, deceased, was a native of England. He served throughout the Boer War and was an officer in the Black Watch, 42nd Royal Highlanders. Both Colonel and Mrs. Samwell are deceased. They had 12 children, one of who, Arthur Lancelot, is deceased. Rev. Alfred Nugent Samwell was educated partly in England and finished his education in Canada and the United States, graduating from Racine College, Racine, Wis. He then took a course in theology and was graduated from the Nashotah Theological Seminary, Milwaukee, Wis., in 1910, and was ordained in St. Paul's Cathedral, Fond du Lac, Wis., by the late Bishop C. C. Grafton, S.T.D., L.L.D. During the World War Reverend Samwell served as army chaplain in the U. S. Ambulance |
