HISTORY OF CAMBRIA COUNTY 993

    Edward Melvin Harris, is a prominent young musician of Johnstown, where he conducts a studio, in the Ledger Building. He was born in Johnstown, May 26, 899, and is a son of Hiram H. and Hannah (Edwards) Harris.
    Mr. Harris was educated in the Johnstown public schools. He studied voice under James Stephens Martin, of Pittsburgh, and piano composition and pipe organ under T. Carl Whitmer, of Pittsburgh. He was a teacher at the Arnold School in Pittsburgh. Mr. Harris has toured through the Southern and Middle Western states both as a dancer and a pianist. In 1923 he opened his studio in the Ledger Building, on Main Street. Subjects taught are piano, musical construction and the ballet.
    Mr. Harris has charge of all ballet classes at the Dramamount School of Music Drama. He writes plots, designs costumes, and composes music for one-act operas and is a contributor of poetry to magazines. He has been organist at Zion's Lutheran Church and the First Presbyterian Church, and at present is organist at Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church, Westmont.
    Mr. Harris is a member of the Muscians' Club of Pittsburgh. His home is at 100 Venango Street, Westmont. He has a wide acquaintance and is recognized as a master in his art.




    Otto Sann is a substantial citizen of Johnstown and is widely known in musical circles of Cambria County. He was born in Germany, May 22, 1878, and is the son of Frederick and Marie (Schaffer) Sann.
    Frederick Sann, deceased, was a native of Germany and an early settler of Johnstown, where he was a well known musician for many years. He returned to his native land in 1890, the year after the Johnstown flood, and brought his family back to the United States with him. He died in February, 1922, and is buried in Grandview Cemetery. His widow lives in Johnstown. To Mr. and Mrs. Sann the following children were born: Frederick, lives in Johnstown; Kathryn, married John Schwing, lives in Philadelphia; Marie, twin sister of Kathryn, married Conrad Van, lives in Johnstown; Emma, deceased; Otto, the subject of this sketch; Charles, lives in Topeka, Kans.; Rudoph, lies in Johnstown; Matilda, married Leo McAchren, lives in Johnstown; Hugo, lives in Johnstown; Frieda, married Harry Miller, lives in Johnstown; and Anna, married Dr. D. S. Bantley, a physician, lives in Johnstown.
