division and served in that capacity until 1915, when he was appointed agent at Spangler.
    On Feb. 28, 1892, Mr. Guyer was united in marriage with Miss Louisa Jane Machtley, the daughter of John F. and Amanda (Allison) Machtley, natives of Bedford County. Mr. Machtley was a Civil war veteran. He took part in the battle of Gettysburg and was with Grant's army when General Lee surrendered. Mr. And Mrs. Machtley are deceased. To Mr. and Mrs. Guyer five children were born; Thomas Wesley, born July 30, 1898, married Harriet Emanuel of Patton, and they have one son, Robert; Odessa Pearl, married James Bendle, lives at Brownsville, Pa., and they have one child, Ellen Louise; Dorothy May, married John F. Iloye, lives at Brownsville, and they have two sons, William Francis and Thomas Milton; Mary Elsie, lives at Brownsville; and Catherine Gertrude, at home.
    Mr. Guyer is a Republican, a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Cresson, and is affiliated with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He is well known in the community and is highly esteemed.




    James G. Patterson is widely known throughout Cambria County as the vice president of the First National Bank of Portage. He was born in Hanover Township, Columbiana County, Ohio, Aug. 21, 1866, and is the son of John and Jeannette (McBain) Patterson.
    John Patterson deceased, was a native of Scotland. When a young boy he came to this country and settled in Ohio. He owned and operated a large farm in Columbiana County for may years and died in 1871. He served throughout the Civil war. Both Mr. and Mrs. Patterson were life members of the Presbyterian Church, and he was identified with the Grand Army of the Republic. To Mr. and Mrs. Patterson, who were married in Scotland, were born the following children: Robert, deceased: Margaret; John; Charles; James G., the subject of this sketch; Ella, lives near Lisbon, Ohio.
    James G. Patterson spent his boyhood in Columbiana County, Ohio, and attended the district schools. He learned the blacksmith trade, which he followed for a number of years. He has lived at Portage since 1894 and has always taken an active interest in the affairs of the town. He is president of the Portage Building and Loan Association and has extensive real estate holdings.
