A. F. Stutzman is among the representative business men of Johnstown and is a worthy descendant of an old and honored pioneer family of Cambria County. He received his education in a plank and slab schoolhouse in Upper Yoder Township, near Crystal Springs. He farmed until 1873, at which time he became interested in the dry goods and grocery business, purchasing the business of David Dilbert. In 1885 Mr. Stutzman said the first wire grain binders and grain drills in Cambria and Somerset counties, and ever since has been one of the leading dealers in farm machinery and implements, buggies, wagons, farm seeds and fertilizers, in this section of the state. In 1900 baled hay and straw, flour, all kinds of mill feeds and grain were added to the implement line, and today it is one of the leading wholesale and retail feed stores in the city. The business is located at 427 Somerset Street since 1894. His first place of business was located at the corner of Franklin and Willow streets. Later he erected a building on Willow Street, midway between Somerset and Franklin streets, which along with the stock, was completely destroyed by the Johnstown flood. He rebuilt on the same site. This building, with the entire stock, was destroyed by fire one year later. A. F. Stutzman was born in Upper Yoder Township, Cambria County, Aug. 30, 1848, and is the son of Abraham and Sarah (Schrock) Stutzman.
