The Greater Johnstown Development Company, with offices in the Knickerbocker Building, 543 Vine Street, was organized and incorporated Jan. 4, 1924. Officers of the company are: T.J. Callet, president; Julius Fisher, secretary-treasurer; and Nat H. Hankoff, director and sales promotion and advertising manager. The company handles real estate in all its phases, doing a general brokerage business and specializing in subdivisions and city property. J. W. Wright, a well known and successful general merchant of Salex, Pa., is a native of Pennsylvania and a member of one of the pioneer families of this state. He was born on a farm in Bedford County, Dec. 6, 1859, and is a son of Isaac and Matilda (Four) Wright. Isaac Wright was born in Bedford County in 1831 and died in 1923. He was engaged in the mercantile business practically all his life and he also owned a farm, which was operated by his sons. During the Civil war he was a general merchandise clerk, and about 1870 he engaged in the general mercantile business at Hollidaysburg, Pa., in partnership with Alexander L. Lloyd. In 1875 he retired and went to live on his farm of 125 acres at Alum Bank, Bedford County, where he spent the remainder of his life. His wife died in 1916. She was born at Martinsburg, Blair County, Pa., in 1829. J. W. Wright was reared on a farm and attended the Pleasantville district school in Bedford County. He and his brother, Lloyd, became owners of the home farm in Bedford County and Mr. Wright was engaged in farming and stock raising until he engaged in the mercantile business. They still own the home farm. Mr. Wright was also extensively engaged in the chicken business. A record production of eggs from his hens was 90 dozen in a period of 10 days. In 1912 Mr. Wright purchased the mercantile stock of Peter Shank at Salix and engaged in the general mercantile business at that place, where he has met with success. He has built up a large business and is recognized throughout the community as a dependable dealer. Mr. Wright was married Dec. 22, 1880, to Miss Charlotte Clark, a native of Bedford County, born April 12, 1861. She is a daughter of David and Katherine (Ling) Clark, also natives of Bedford County. David Clark was a farmer all his life. He died in 1891 in his seventy-fourth year, and his wife died in 1901, aged 73 years. |
