especially to the younger members of the bar, in whom as a judge he took great interest. Upon retiring from public office Mr. Stephens again tool up the active practice of law, forming a partnership with his brother, John H. Stephens, and Walter E. Glass, until his death.
While reared in the Baptist faith, Mr. Stephens was broad and liberal in his religious views. Always a Republican in politics and a firm believer in the principles of his party, he was a staunch advocate of the fundamental American principles of personal liberty, personal security, and private property. Mr. Stephens was unmarried.
Charles Schenkemeyer is a retired representative business man of Johnstown and a member of a prominent family of Cambria County. Mr. Schenkemeyer was the founder of the Johnstown Granite and Marble Works, and is widely known throughout Cambria County. He was born in Hanover, Germany, May 22, 1855, the son of Carl and Julia Schenkemeyer. In 1883 Charles Schenkemeyer emigrated to the United States, landing in Philadelphia, and he immediately settled in Johnstown. He entered the employ of the Cambria Steel Company, with whom he remained until 1887. He then established himself in business as a general contractor, but three years later founded the Johnstown Granite and Marble Works. He also enlarged the business and its products include high-grad memorial art work and interior marble work of all kinds. A tiling business was organized in 1911, in connection with the company's other work. Both Mr. and Mrs. Schenkemeyer reside in Johnstown. They are the parents of the following children; Louis, identified with the business established by his father; William; Mary, married Edward Dull, lives in Johnstown; Gertrude, married Bruno Danker, she is now deceased; Edward, associated with his father's business; Minnie, married to William Nenstiel, lives in Johnstown; Charles, Jr., lives in Johnstown and associated with his fathers business; Freida, married Frank Gobert, lives in Johnstown; Emma, married Elmer Swanson, lives in Johnstown; Helen, married Robert Hartman, lives in Johnstown; and Edith, lives at home.
Louis Schenkemeyer was born in Germany, Sept. 29, 1876. He was married Oct. 12, 1901, to Miss Maude James, a native of England, and they have three children: Norma; married John Trimble, a city engineer, Johnstown; Louis, Jr., and Marie, both at home.
