the Catholic Church. They had nine children, all of whom are deceased except Thomas F., the subject of this sketch.
    Thomas F, Murtha attended the parochial schools of Johnstown and started life in the employ of the local wire mill. After five years he went to Beaver Falls, Pa., but in three years returned to Johnstown, where he worked at various occupations, including the insurance business. He conducted the first installment house in Johnstown at 137 Clinton Street and dealt in general merchandise. He was also connected with the Union Credit Company for two years. In 1917 Mr. Murtha was elected justice of the peace and re-elected to the office in 1924. He is also a member of the City Council from the Tenth Ward. He lives at 900 East Main Street.
    In March, 1888, Mr. Murtha was married to Miss Margaret Redman, of Illinois, who died Oct, 17, 1922. They were the parents of the following children: Mary married Joseph Brown, lives at Erie, Pa.; Joseph, lives in Johnstown; Thomas, lives at Altoona, Pa.; Margaret, William, Leo, Rosella, and Josephine, all at home, George, deceased; Eugene and Paul, both at home. There are five grandchildren: Margaret, Eugene, Raymond, John and Louise Brown.
    Mr. Murtha is a Democrat and a member of St. John's Catholic Church. He and his family have a wide acquaintance in Cambria County and are well liked.




    Herbert Stack, superintendent of secondary schools of Johnstown, is among the well known educators of Cambria County. He was born at Orange, Mass., March 29, 1892, and is the son of William James and Nellie Ellen (McGrath) Stack.
    William James Stack was born at Amherst, Mass., and spent his entire life in that state. He is a hotel keeper and lives at Springfield, Mass. His wife, who was born at Hadley, Mass., died Jan. 28, 1920. To Mr. and Mrs. Stack were born vive children: Edward William, advertising manager of the Indian Motorcycle Company, Springfield, Mass.; Charles T., superintendent of the Chase Turbine Manufacturing Company, Orange, Mass.; Elizabeth, married Henry Brown, lives at New Britain, Conn.; Herbert, the subject of this sketch; and John P., a student.
