DAVID SHAFFER

David Shaffer, one of the oldest and best-known man in his section of Cambria County, died at his home in Summerhill Borough shortly after 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon, aged about eighty-one years. He had been a sufferer from dropsy for years, but was not compelled to take to his bed until within the past month.

Mr. Shaffer was the son of Jacob and Elizabeth Pringle Shaffer, and was born in Richland Township in 1822. He was one of ten children, seven brothers and three sisters, all of whom are now dead with the exception of Christ Shaffer, of Wilmore. David Shaffer, about sixty years ago, was married to Miss Margaret Work, who died in 1891. Of the six children born to Mr. Shaffer, one is dead; those surviving being Austin, a PRR conductor living at Altoona; Mary, wife of Zachariah Dunmeyer, Franklin Borough; Della, wife of W. G. Griffith, of Pleasant Valley, near Conemaugh; and Emma, at home.

The funeral will be held tomorrow, interment to be made in Pringle Hill Cemetery following services at the late home of the deceased, which will begin at 1 o'clock. The Reverend A. Davidson, of the Wilmore U.B. Church, will have charge of the obsequies.

Mr. Shaffer was a lifelong Republican and had been a reader of the Tribune for many years. He worked on the Old Portage Railroad, after which he farmed, later working for the Cambria Steel Company as a blacksmith. He retired from active life some years ago. Mr. Shaffer was a church member for over half a century.
