How He Was Killed

A friend of the late John M. Champeno, who was killed on the Pittsburgh, Virginia & Charleston Railroad yesterday, states that the deceased was twenty-three years old on the 19th of August and leaves a wife and one child. It seems that he met his death by being thrown from the deck of a freight car to the track, the wheels of several cars passing over his body. The train was stopped and some of the employes [sic] , recognizing the injured man sent word of the accident to his brother, George, who resides at Homestead. The remains were removed to the latter's home and this morning at 10:47 were brought to this place and taken charge of by his father. Deceased was employed as a brakeman at the time of his death.

Not Altogether Unexpected.

Young Champeno, the brakeman who was fatally injured on the Monongahela Division yesterday was best known as "Heenan." His middle name, it appears, was Carter and by that he was called on the Division. Heenan had a hard time of it, with his legs and arms. They were perpetually being broken or cut. It was only recently that he threw away his crutches after having one of his legs broken twice within the space of two or three months. His friends were not surprised that in the accident which caused his death he lost both legs and one arm.
