Dr. G. A. Zimmerman Dies in New Mexico
Prominent Johnstown Physician Expires at Hospital in Albuquerque

Left Here in January

Dr. Gustavus A. Zimmerman, of 513 Franklin street, who was taken to New Mexico six weeks ago by his wife and daughter, Mrs. Charles O. Campbell, died at the Presbyterian Hospital, Albuquerque, between 3 and 4 o'clock this morning, in his 64th year. Dr. Zimmerman had not been in good health for some time and was taken to New Mexico in the hope of being benefited. A day or so after the Zimmerman party left Johnstown, the latter part of January, Dr. Zimmerman was seized with two hemorrhages of the lungs, the first while a passenger on California Limited in the Chicago yards, and the second a short time after being removed to St. Luke's Hospital in that city. A few days later Edward Zimmerman, of Albuquerque, a son of Dr. and Mrs. Zimmerman, arrived in Chicago and accompanied his parents and sister the following week to Albuquerque.

Dr. Zimmerman was somewhat improved at the time of his removal from the Chicago hospital, but not long after he reached Albuquerque he suffered a relapse and gradually declined. Charles O. Campbell, son-in-law of Dr. Zimmerman, was notified of his death today by telegram, which also stated that the family will leave Albuquerque this afternoon with the body. They will probably arrive here on the early train Monday morning.

G. A. Zimmerman was the second son of the late Henry Zimmerman and Mrs. Louise Burggraf Zimmerman, the latter of Locust street, Third Ward, and was born in Johnstown on February 7, 1850. Henry Zimmerman, who was a native of Germany, was born in 1822 and came to Johnstown when a young man. He and Miss Louise Burggraf were married in April, 1847. Among their children were the following: George C. Zimmerman, of Conemaugh Township; Dr. G. A. Zimmerman, Miss Crissie Zimmerman, who is at home with her mother, the latter in her 84th year; Attorney Theodore and Milton Zimmerman, who were among the persons to perish in the Johnstown Flood of 1889; William H. who died in 1906; Amelia, wife of John Hellstrom, of Wheeling W. Va.; Jessie, widow of John S. F. Winans; and Herbert Zimmerman, who expired at the home of his mother a few years ago. Henry Zimmerman's death occurred in 1880.

During his boyhood, G. A. Zimmerman attended the Johnstown schools, later enrolling as student in the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. He received his diploma from this institution in 1873, later traveling in the eastern cities in the interest of several drug firms. A few years later he enrolled as a medical student at the University of Pennsylvania, receiving his degree from that institution in 1870. He then opened an office on Locust street, this city, but returned to Philadelphia two or three years later to take a post-graduate course at the University. From July 1882 to 1885 Dr. Zimmerman had an office in Ebensburg. He sold out to the late Dr. Thomas Davidson and then went to Wilkes-Barre, where he practiced until 1888, at which time he returned to Johnstown and opened a drug store in the Hulbert House on Clinton street, where he lost all his property. After the Flood Dr. Zimmerman opened a drug store in one of the frame structures in Central park, remaining there until 1892. From the Park building Dr. Zimmerman removed his store to the Woolf block, where he remained for seven years. He then occupied the Zimmerman block on Main street for three years, but sold out to Messenger & Co., on account of impaired health. During the past 13 years Dr. Zimmerman had been conducting a drug store in Dale Borough, where he built up a large trade.

In December 1883, Dr. Zimmerman and Miss Jennie Davis, daughter of Mrs. Sarah Griffith Davis, formerly of Ebensburg, now of Wilkes-Barre, were united in marriage. Mrs. Zimmerman survives her husband, with a son and a daughter, mentioned above. The deceased is a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Johnstown Council, Royal [illegible], and was the oldest alumnus of the University of Pennsylvania in Johnstown. The funeral arrangements will be announced later.
