Philip LaMantia, proprietor of LaMantia Produce Company, ranks among Nanty Glo's progressive and successful business men. He was born at Termine Imerese, Italy, June 22, 1888, and is the son of Joseph and Augustine LaMantia. Joseph LaMantia, deceased, spent his entire life in Italy and was prominent in the fruit and produce business at Termine Imerese. He was the son of Philip LaMantia, who was the founder of the business. He was the owner of large tracts of land and raised olives and grapes extensively. Joseph LaMantia died March 1, 1918, and his widow resides on the home place. Mr. and Mrs. LaMantia had five children: Philip, the subject of this sketch; Dominica, married Samuel Pusaturi, lived at Nanty Glo for some time, now resides in Italy; Philippa, lives in Italy; Josephine, deceased, was the wife of Philip Cutrtara, a World War veteran, who served in the Italian army for eight years, lives at Sharpesburg, Pa.; and Anthony, associated in business with his brother at Nanty Glo. Philip LaMantia attended the schools of his native land and was associated in business with his father until July, 1907, when he emigrated to this country. He settled at Blairsville, Pa., and in January, 1910, removed to Nanty Glo, where he established a wholesale and retail produce business. He disposed of the retail branch of this business Jan. 15, 1926, to a. Camarata, but still conducts the wholesale department. In 1917 Mr. LaMantia purchased the Home Hotel, which was destroyed by fire in 1922. He erected a modern two story office building on that site. In 1921 he erected the building occupied by the F. J. Lauer Company, local Ford agency. Mr. LaMantia's offices are located in this building. He is a director of the Miners and merchants Bank. In 1914 Mr. LaMantia was married to Miss Mary LaMantia, the daughter of Anthony and Mary (Cureri) LaMantia. He died July 17, 1925, and is buried in Italy, where his widow resides. Mr. and Mrs. LaMantia have two children: Augustina, born Feb. 4, 1915; and Joseph, born Nov. 3, 1917. Mr. LaMantia is a Republican and a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. |
