he came to Barnesboro. He was with the Walnut Run Supply Company two years, and eight years with the Barnes & Tucker Store Company.
In 1903 Mr. Scollon organized the Scollon Dry Goods Company, which was locatee on the present site of Luxenberg's Jewelry Store. In the spring of 1907 this store was destroyed by fire, when all buildings around the public square on Barnesboro were burned. In the fall of 1907 Mr. Scollon built his present building, which is located on the corner of Philadelphia and Tenth Streets. The Scollon Department Store is the most modern store outside of the city of Johnstown in Cambria County. They carry a complete line of carpets, shoes, millinery, and high-grade line of ladies' ready-to-wear garments. Mr. Scollon also conducts one of the finest meat markets and grocery store in Barnesboro, and has built up a flourishing business in all departments. He is also interested in the Tri-County Wholesale Grocery Company, located at North Barnesboro.
On Dec. 29, 1894, Mr. Scollon was untied in marriage with Miss Alice Gill, born in Yorkshire, England, a daughter of Joseph and Sarah (Mawson) Gill, who came from England when Alice was a small child. The Gill family located at Barnesboro, where he followed coal mining. He is now deceased and his widow lives with her daughters in Barnesboro. Mr. and Mrs. Scollon have eight children, as follows: Sarah R., a graduate of Westchester and Barnesboro High School, now a teacher in the Barnesboro High School; Elizabeth, married Robert L. Leonard, lives in Barnesboro, where Mr. Leonard is a bookkeeper in the First National Bank. Mrs. Leonard is a graduate of Dickinson Seminary; Catherine, a graduate of Barnesboro High School and Indiana Normal School; Thomas, is a graduate of Barnesboro High School and attended W. & J. College two years; Alice, a graduate of Indiana Normal School, associated with her father in business; Margaret, taking post-graduate work in Barnesboro High School; Mae, a second year student in high school; and Richard, Jr., a student in the eighth grade. The family home is located on Park Avenue.
Mr. Scollon is a progressive man in business and in public affairs. He has served eight years as councilman, being for a time president of the council of Barnesboro, and as president of the Red Cross. In church affairs he has taken an active part. He is a member of the Presbyterian Church and has served as an elder in same since 1902. Soon after Mr. Scollon located in Barnesboro he with other men organized the Presbyterian Church, and after the church was destroyed by fire a new one was built in 1902.
