has been actively identified with the prohibition movement for the past 30 years and during his last campaign for councilman was defeated solely on account of his position on the dry movement. Fraternally he is a Mason, having attained to the thirty-second degree, and in national politics is a Republican.




    George Steele is recognized as a successful business man of Barnesboro, where he has the agency for the Dodge and Buick automobiles. He was born in Wales, Aug. 31, 1873, the son of Richard and Margaret (Perry) Steele.
    Richard Steele, deceased, was a native of Wales. In 1881 he came to this country and settled at Brisbin, in Clearfield County, where he worked as a miner until his death in 1910. His widow resides at Johnstown. Mr. and Mrs. Steele had four children: Rachael, married William Gilbert, lives at Houtzdale, Pa.; George, the subject of this sketch; David, a mine forman for the J. K. Wright Coal Company, Houtzdale, Pa; and Esther, married Edward Thomas, lives at Johnstown.
    George Steele was nine years of age when his family emigrated to this country. He attended the schools of Brisbin and in 1905 went to Philipsburg, where he remained until 1919. He then located in Barnesboro, but soon removed to Philipsburg, where he engaged in the restaurant business for several years. He later returned to Barnesboro and for two years conducted a restaurant in this city. On May 1, 1923, he became local agent for the Dodge and Buick automobiles. He has a large sales agency and repair shop and carries a complete line of automobile accessories.
    On July 15, 1896, Mr. Steele was married to Miss Hannah Wallin, who was born in Sweden, April 23, 1878, the daughter of Henry and Augusta (Gustafson) Wallin. The former is deceased and the latter resides with Mr. and Mrs. Steele. Mr. and Mrs. Wallin had the following children: Ida, Hannah, John, Helen, and Emily. To Mr. and Mrs. Steele a son, Richard Henry, was born May 1, 1897. He is a graduate of Philipsburg High School and Dickinson College, and is associated in business with his father. He served in the navy during the World war. Mr. Steele was married May 7, 1920, to Miss Ester McNulty, the daughter of Frank and Ordella (Myers) McNulty, a sketch of whom appears in this history.
