Binder is among the successful and well known pioneer business men of Hastings, where he is engaged in the hardware business. He was born at Carrolltown, April 4, 1864, and is a son of Edward L. and Julia (Schroth) Binder. Edward L. Binder, deceased, was a native of Germany. He was 12 years of age when his parents came to this country and settled at Carrolltown, where he learned the shoemaker's trade. Later he engaged in the hotel business at that place for about 25 years. He died in 1888 and his widow died two years later. She was the daughter of Martin Schroth, a native of Germany, who also engaged in the hotel business at Carrolltown for many years. The following children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Binder: I. L., the subject of this sketch; Edwin, lives at Barnesboro; Theresa, married James McGonigal, lives at Carrolltown; Michael, lives at Altoona; Emma, married John Derricot, lives at Turtle Creek, Pa.; Harold, lives at Spangler; Oscar, Englebert, Raymond, Emma, William and Henry, all deceased. I. L. Binder received his education in the schools of Carrolltown and after several years removed to Hastings, where he operated a restaurant for four years. In 1888 he established his present business. He carries a complete line of builders' supplies and has a well established trade. Mr. Binder is also a director of the Hastings Bank and a stockholder in the First National Bank. He has extensive mining interests in Cambria County, being identified with Binder Brothers Coal Company. On May 5, 1890, Mr. Binder was united in marriage with Miss Amelia Luther, of Carrolltown, a daughter of John W. and Susan (Sharbaugh) Luther, both deceased. The following children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Binder: Walter, died in infancy; Ruth, married James McNellis, lives at Hastings; and they have four children, Patricia, James, Paul, and Mary Louise; Charles, died at the age of two years; Oscar, attended Pennsyl- |
