Y. M. C. A., and the Royal Canadian Aero Club of Canada. The Ryan family have always been progressive, public spirited and citizens of real worth. William G. Hershberger is one of Cambria County's enterprising and successful business men. He is engaged in the general contracting business at Geistown. Mr. Hershberger was born near his present home in Richland Township, June 7, 1871, and is the son of Samuel I. and Mary (Livingston) Hershberger. Samuel I. Hershberger was born in Richland Township, Sept. 14, 1839, and died in April, 1921. He was the son of Isaac Hershberger, who was born in Richland Township, Nov. 24, 1811, and died Sept. 9, 1897. His parents came to Cambria County from Lancaster County, Pa. Isaac Hershberger was a leading citizen and served as squire of Cambria County for 52 years. He married Rebecca Frye, who was born April 11, 1834. Their children were: Jacob, who died while in service during the Civil war; Samuel I., father of the subject of this sketch; John, David, and Daniel. Samuel I. Hershberger farmed on the home place until 1859, when he became interested in the oil wells of Pennsylvania. He built the first derricks and drilled the first wells in the fields of Oil City, Pa. Later Mr. Hershberger returned to his farm in Richland Township. He served as road supervisor and also as school director for a number of years. He was married March 24, 1861, to Miss Mary Livingston, the daughter of David Livingston, who was the son of David Livingston, who served during the War of 1812. They were prominent citizens of Somerset County. To Samuel I. and Mary (Livingston) Hershberger the following children were born: Emma Jane, married Cyrus Helsel, both deceased; D. M., married Lizzie Eichensher, lives at Johnstown; John, married Lizzie Trevarrow, lives in Richland Township; Mary, deceased, was the wife of Elmer Berkey; William G., the subject of this sketch; Sadie, died at the age of five years; Elizabeth, married John Blough, both deceased; Samuel T., married Kate Snyder, both deceased; and Isaac, married Arvilla Stonebreaker, lives in Richland Township. William G. Hershberger attended the district schools of Richland Township and when a young man learned the carpenter trade. For four years he operated the Levergood Street Garage at Johnstown under the firm name of Hershberger & Strayer. The building is now known as the |
