Elks Lodge. He has always been well known and highly esteemed throughout Cambria County. Edward Miles is recognized as one of the progressive business men and substantial citizens of Portage, where he has engaged in the general mercantile business since 1907. He was born in Martha Furnace, Center County, Pa., May 26, 1873, and is the son of George Ward and Harriet (Turner) Miles. George Ward Miles, deceased, was a native of Clearfield County, born in 1840. He was a carpenter by trade and spent the greater part of his life in Center County. He was a Republican and a lifelong member of the Baptist Church. He died in 1889. His wife, also a native of Center County, is deceased. To Mr. and Mrs. Miles the following children were born: William, deceased; Edward, the subject of this sketch; Laura, died at the age of five years; Mary, married A. McKinney, lives at Altoona, Pa.; Roy, lives at State College, Pa; and Bessie, deceased, was the wife of Harry Steer. Edward Miles spent his boyhood on his grandfather's farm in Clearfield County and later worked in the mines at Windber.
