Elks Lodge. He has always been well known and highly esteemed throughout Cambria County.
    Linton Groke spent his boyhood in Portage and attended the public schools. He is also a graduate of Dickinson College. During the World war he served in France with the Medical Corps, No. 82. and upon his discharge from the army he engaged in business with William Johnson as local agent for the Paige and Jewett automobiles. The officers of the present company are: Linton Groke, president; Henry Turner, vice president; and C. V. Painter, secretary and treasurer. Since 1923 the Peoples Auto Service Company have handled the Chrysler and Chevrolet cars and have a well established business throughout this territory.
    Mr. Groke was married June 29, 1917. Mr. Groke was united in marriage with Miss Catherine Turner, the daughter of Henry and Frances (Wright) Turner, residents of Portage. They have a son, Linton Henry, Jr., born July 7, 1923.
    Politically Mr. Groke is a Republican, and he is affiliated with the Knights of Pythias, American Legion, Elks Lodge, and Fort Hommes et Eight Chevaux. He is a member of the Lutheran Church.




    Edward Miles is recognized as one of the progressive business men and substantial citizens of Portage, where he has engaged in the general mercantile business since 1907. He was born in Martha Furnace, Center County, Pa., May 26, 1873, and is the son of George Ward and Harriet (Turner) Miles.
    George Ward Miles, deceased, was a native of Clearfield County, born in 1840. He was a carpenter by trade and spent the greater part of his life in Center County. He was a Republican and a lifelong member of the Baptist Church. He died in 1889. His wife, also a native of Center County, is deceased. To Mr. and Mrs. Miles the following children were born: William, deceased; Edward, the subject of this sketch; Laura, died at the age of five years; Mary, married A. McKinney, lives at Altoona, Pa.; Roy, lives at State College, Pa; and Bessie, deceased, was the wife of Harry Steer.
    Edward Miles spent his boyhood on his grandfather's farm in Clearfield County and later worked in the mines at Windber. Since 1907 he has been interested in business at Portage and owns one of the largest and finest general merchandise stores in this section. He is a stockholder in
