ated the Evans Service Station at Lilly, where he is local agent for the Prest-O-Life Battery Company, Penzoil gas and oils, also independent gasoline, Firestone, Michelin and United States tires. He is the agent for Durant motor cars. John A. Leap, who lives retired at Lilly, is a prominent pioneer business man of Cambria County. He was born at Lilly, Aug. 22, 1857, and is the son of Christian and Mary (Golden) Leap. Christian Leap, deceased, was born in eastern Pennsylvania, and when a boy came to Cambria County with his parents and settled at Lilly, where he followed mining. At the time of his death in 1882 he was employed as mine superintendent. His wife was born in Ireland in 1838 and died in 1898. They were members of the Catholic Church. to Mr. and Mrs. Leap the following children were born: Anna, married Christopher George, both deceased; John A., the subject of this sketch; Martin deceased; James, lives at Ebensburg; Mary married George Litzinger, lives at Turtle Creek, Pa.; Thomas P., a sketch of whom appears in this history; Agnes, the widow of Michael Bradley; and Christopher, deceased. John A. Leap grew up at Lilly and when 12 years of age began work in the mines. He was thus employed until the time of his retirement in 1918, at which time he was one of the prominent mine owners of Cambria County. He operated the Mentzer mine for ten years, which was sold to Hammond & Richards. Mr. Leap is also a dealer in automobile tires, having a store in Altoona, Pa., and at present is a stockholder in the First National Bank of Cresson, and the Bank of Lilly. He has lived in his present home at Lilly since 1880. On June 1st (??) 1879, Mr. Leap was united in marriage with Miss Ida M. Sanford, who was born at Portsmouth, Ohio, April 8, 1858, the daughter of Charles and anna Sanford, both deceased. To Mr. and Mrs. Leap eight children were born as follows: Idonna M., married Patrick J. Kelley, lives at Williamsport, Pa., and they have had three children, Marian, deceased, John Roy, and Ida C.; Oliver F., lives at Johnstown, married Elizabeth Leahy, and they have eight children, Ray, Kenneth, Ilene, George, Edgar, Martha, Anna, and Marie; Anna married Elmer Short, lives at Lilly, and they have four children, Vivian, Leta, Christian and William; Viretta, mar- |
