950 | HISTORY OF CAMBRIA COUNTY | |
C., a graduate of St. Charles College, Baltimore, Md., now attends St. Francis College; Celestine, attends Lilly High School; Helen M., attends St. Aloysius College, Cresson; James R., William J. and Joseph Edwin, all at home. Thomas W. Ryan, who has been in the employ of the Pennsylvania Railroad for 40 years, is among the well known and substantial citizens of Lilly. He was born at this place, Aug. 18, 1870, and is the son of Simon and Sabina (Maxwell) Ryan. Both Simon Ryan and his wife were natives of Ireland. In 1850 they came to the United States and settled at Lilly, where Mr. Ryan followed railroading. He was one of the builders of the old Portage Railroad, and later in life engaged in the hotel business at Lilly. He was a Democrat and prominent in politics, having served as tax collector, and the first street commissioner of the borough. He died in 1893 and his widow died in 1916. To Mr. and Mrs. Ryan the following children were born: John, lives at Cresson, Pa.; Michael, died at the age of 25 years; Thomas W., the subject of this sketch; and Margaret, married W. F. Streeter, live at Oil City, Pa. Thomas W. Ryan was 15 years of age when he learned telegraphy with "Pop" Kelly, at that time station agent at Lilly. Mr. Ryan later served as extra telegrapher at Lilly, afterward being transferred to Mineral Point, Pa., as night operator, and later to Kittanning Point and Sonman. He was stationed at Cresson for 10 years, then as train dispatcher at Pittsburgh, and for the past 17 years has been train dispatcher out of South Fork. He lives at Lilly. In 1899 Mr. Ryan was married to Miss Agnes Wenderoth, who was born at Wilmore, the daughter of John and Josephine (Maltxle) [sic] Wenderoth, residents of Cresson. Before her marriage Mrs. Ryan taught school for one term in Gallitzin Township and two terms at Cresson boro, Pa.
