HISTORY OF CAMBRIA COUNTY | 951 | |
B., a graduate of Lilly High School and Indiana State Normal School, is a teacher in the schools of Lilly; Agnes S., a graduate of Lilly High School and the Lock Haven Normal School, and is now teaching in public school at Summerhill, Pa.; Dorothy J., Helen C., Joseph J., Thomas W., Jr., and Paul G., all at home. John W. Short, deceased, was a highly esteemed citizen of Lilly and a member of an honored pioneer family of Cambria County. He was born at Lilly in 1824, and died July 2, 1900. Mr. Short was the son of Samuel and Mary (Carrigan) Short. Both Samuel and Mary (Carrigan) Short were early settlers of Loretto in Cambria County. He was a cabinet maker and soon after his marriage removed to Lilly, where he spent the remainder of his life. To Mr. and Mrs. Short the following children were born: Peter; Thomas; John W., the subject of this sketch; Michael, killed in action during the Civil War; and a sister who is deceased. After completing his schooling at Lilly, John W. Short purchased part of the old homestead, where he lived with his family. He was a carpenter and worked at that trade for many years. He later worked on the railroad as a fireman and for ten years as an engineer. Mr. Short is buried at Lilly. In 1842 Mr. Short was united in marriage with Miss Mary Murphy, a native of Cambria County and the daughter of Michael and Mary (McDade) Murphy, both natives of Ireland. When Mrs. Short was two years of age her parents came to this country and settled in Cambria County, where her father farmed and mined. To John W. and Mary (Murphy) Short the following children were born: Blair, lives retired at Lilly; Ellsworth, deceased; Laura, the widow of James Burke, lives at Lilly; Irene, died at the age of 18 years; Stella, deceased, was the wife of Thomas Moyer; Syvilla, lives at home; Blanche, married Harry Powers, lives at Portage; Herman, lives at Lilly; Nettie, married William Clinemyer, lives at Lilly; Emmet, lives at Gallitzin, Pa.; and Elmer, lives at Lilly. Mr. and Mrs. Short also reared and educated a grandson, Lawrence, the son of Blair Short. |
