throughout this section of the country and is a director of the First National Bank of Lilly and the Farmers National Bank of Cresson. A. B. Monteith, the well known superintendent of the Cherry Tree Coal Mines of Emeigh, was born in the small mining town of Arnot, Pa., Dec. 11, 1881, a son of James and Elizabeth (Houston) Monteith. James Monteith was born in Scotland, as was also his wife. Shortly after their marriage they came to the United States and settled in Tioga County, Pa., where he followed mining such as timbering and opening up new drifts. He died in 1905, aged 66, and is buried in Patton, where he had resided the last 10 years of his life. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and active in Christian work for years in Clearfield County, Pa., where he was Sunday school superintendent and also a local preacher. His widow is now living with a daughter at Cresson, Pa., and is 88 years of age. Mr. and Mrs. Monteith were the parents of 18 children, 18 of whom grew to adult life, as follows: Alexander, a state mine inspector of Patton for 20 years, died in Patton in 1920, aged 56; John, died in 1904, aged 34, and is buried at Patton. He was an electrical repair man and also served as mine foreman for the greater part of his life; William, died in 1923, buried in Patton, was a stationary engineer around mines. A. B. Monteith was reared in Arnot until four years of age, when he removed to Houtsdale with his parents, where he attended the public schools. He worked for a time in the mines at Houtsdale, and at the age of 16 he came to Patton, where he was engaged in mining until 1902, when he removed to St. Benedict and worked in the Peale Mines. Mr. Monteith has been connected with the same company for 25 years and has served in nearly all capacities during that time, and can say with pride that he has never had any trouble in any of the several positions he has held, nor has he ever lost a day. |
