HISTORY OF CAMBRIA COUNTY | 1045 | |
H. Lee Wilson, city engineer, is a prominent citizen of Johnstown. He was born in this city, Sept. 21, 1886, and is the son of H. H. and Kate (Decker) Wilson. Rev. John Martvon is widely known in Johnstown, where he is pastor of St. Stephans Slovak Catholic Church. He was born in Slovakia, Jan. 5, 1857, and was ordained to the priesthood in his native land, April 15, 1884. Reverend Martvon came to this country in 1889 and was identified with the Cleveland diocese as pastor of St. Ladislaus Church for two years. He then came to Johnstown, and in March, 1894, was made pastor of St. Stephans church. During his pastorate the parish has enjoyed a remarkable growth. Extensive improvements have been made in the church and school buildings and there are now over 900 pupils enrolled, who are under the supervision of the sisters from Joliet, Ill. Reverend Martvon's assistant is Rev. Anthony Coby. Several other parishes have sprung from the original church of St. Stephans, among them being St. Mary's Greek Catholic, St. Rochas' Croatian, St. Casimir's Polish Church, St. Emericus Magyar, SS. Peter and Paul, and St. Francis Church. |
