the daughter of Conrad and Louise Gearhardt, pioneer residents of Johnstown. Mr. and Mrs. Thiele have two daughters: Louise and Amelia Jene.
    In politics Mr. Thiele is identified with the Republican party. He and his family hold membership in the English Lutheran Church.




    H. R. Turby, president of Kern & Turby, plumbing and heating contractors of Johnstown, is a well known and highly respected citizen of this city. He was born at Nanticoke, Pa., April 29, 1882, and is a son of Theodore T. and Belle (Cain) Turby. Mr. Turby was for many years a conductor on the Pennsylvania Railroad and was killed by an accident in March, 1912.
    After attending the public schools of Nanticoke and Wilkes-Barre, Pa., he was employed by the plumbing firm of Joseph Schuler & Brother of Wilkes-Barre, where he remained for two years. He then went to New York City, where he attended the New York Trade School for six months, after which he worked at his trade in Pittsburgh until he came to Johnstown in 1901. The next 11 years were spent in the employ of the Johnstown Supply House, a well known plumbing concern. On Sept. 1, 1912, a partnership was formed with J. J. Kern ( now deceased), under the firm name of Kern & Turby. On Jan. 1, 1924, the business was incorporated, the present members of the firm being: H. R. Turby, Mrs. Ada F. Kern, and J. J. McCann. This business has developed into one of the largest and best concerns of its kind in Johnstown. Twenty people are employed. Among some of the larger contracts of this firm may be mentioned the Cochran High School, Penn Traffic Building addition, Johnstown Auto Company Building, Southmont School, and Hudson Street School. Their plant is located at 245 Conemaugh Street.
    On May 23, 1902, Mr. Turby was married to Miss Lillian M. Custer, a daughter of Daniel and Flora (Belle) Custer of Conemaugh. Mr. Custer is deceased. To Mr. and Mrs. Turby three children have been born: Mary, born Aug. 9, 1903; Flora, born Dec. 16, 1906; and Robert, born Sept.15, 1914.
    Mr. Turby is a Republican and belongs to the Rotary Club, Knights of Pythias, and Junior Order of American Mechanics. He and his family are members of Trinity Lutheran Church. The family residence is at 612 Wood Street.
