Wilson McMillen Slick, who is successfully engaged in the general insurance business in Johnstown, with offices at 313 U. S. Bank Building, is a veteran of the World war. He was born in this city, Aug. 25, 1894, and is the son of Harry W. and Harriet (Herrington) Slick.
Harry W. Slick, who lives retired, is a prominent citizen of Johnstown. He is a native of Pennsylvania and at an early age located in Johnstown, where he was a manager of the local office of the Singer Sewing Machine Company. He served as city treasurer from 1912 until 1924. Mr. Slick is a Republican, a member of the Presbyterian Church and is a life member of Cambria Lodge No. 278, Masonic order. His wife is deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Slick had two children: Helen, died in infancy; and Wilson McMillen, the subject of this sketch.
Harriet (Herrington) Slick was born in Pennsylvania, the daughter of Wilson D. and Martha Herington. Wilson D. Herrington was born in Crawford County, Pa., in September, 1831. He was a moulder and resided at Meadville for many years. HE died at Rochester, Pa., Feb. 18, 1880, and was buried at Sandy Vale Cemetery, later being removed to Grand View Cemetery, Johnstown, June 18, 1887. His wife was born at Blairsville, Pa., and died at Johnstown, March 30, 1884, at the age of 49 years. She was buried in Sandy Vale Cemetery, later being removed to Grand View Cemetery, June 18, 1887. A son, Harry Herrington, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Wilson D. Herrington. He died at Johnstown, May 31, 1884, at the age of 23 years. With his parents he is buried in Grand View Cemetery.
William McMillen Slick was educated in the public and high schools of Johnstown and in 1913 engaged in civil engineering, following that profession until 1917, when he took up the insurance business. He was identified with the Fidelity Mutual Life Insurance Company of Philadelphia from February 1917 until July, 1923, when he became local representative for the Reliance Life Insurance Company of Pittsburgh. Territory covered by the local office includes Cambria, Indians, Somerset and Clearfield Counties. In 1925 Mr. Slick was made president of the executive staff of the Reliance Life Insurance Company.
Mr. Slick volunteered for service in the World war on May 26, 1918, and was sent to Camp Lee, Va., as a member of the 145th Department Brigade. He was transferred to the 18th Battery Field Artillery, Central Officers training School in December, 1918, and was commissioned a second lieutenant. The following day he was discharged.
