Pendry, where he served for three years. In 1906 he entered the employ of the Johnstown fire department as a hose man, and a short time later was appointed lieutenant of Fire Department No. 1. In 1908 he was advanced to captain and in 1916 was acting fire chief. In 1921 he was appointed first assistant chief of the Johnstown Fire Department, a position which he still holds. In July, 1909, Mr. Roof was seriously injured during the Old Forge plant fire at Woodvale, and was out of the department for six months. In 1912 he was injured again and was forced to retire from the department for 15 days. This was the Flue fire on Conemaugh Street.
    Mr. Roof is a Republican, a member of the Methodist Church, the J. O. U. A. M. P. O. S. of A. and trustee of the Johnstown Firemans Relief Association.
    In 1901 Mr. Roof was married to Miss Katherine Boyer, a daughter of Mike Boyer. Mr. Boyer is night warden at the City Hall, Johnstown. Mrs. Boyer is deceased and is buried in Grand View Cemetery. To Mr. and Mrs. Roof three children have been born: Harry L., born in 1902. He enlisted in the United States Army Coast Artillery and served a full enlistment of three years, which was served in Honolulu, Hawaiian Islands. He was discharged as a first class gunner. After his return to civilian life he was appointed to the Pennsylvania State Highway Patrol and was one of the first to be appointed form this district. He is now a salesman for the Keystone Beverage Company; Edith P., a graduate of the Johnstown High School in 1922, entered the West Penn Hospital at Pittsburgh, where she is a student nurse; and James W., a salesman.
    Mr. Roof is an excellent citizen and an asset to his community.




    Dr. Francis T. Carney, a prominent young physician and surgeon of Johnstown, was born in this city, Sept. 21, 1898, and is a son of Frank T. and Mary (McNeelis) Carney.
    Frank T. Carney, deceased, was well known in Johnstown for many years as superintendent of the police and fire departments of the Cambria Steel Company. He was born in Johnstown, Dec. 7, 1856, the son of John P. and Ellen (Keley) Carney. John P. Carney, second son of John and Bridgest (Devaney) Carney, was born in County Mayo, Ireland, Jan. 6, 1817. He emigrated to the United States and after residing for some time
