in Boston, Mass., removed to Johnstown and later to Westmoreland County, Pa., where he engaged in farming. He died Feb. 24, 1901. To Mr. and Mrs. John P. Carney the following children were born: John, died in childhood; Margaret, born April 1, 1855, died Sept. 7, 1904; Frank T., father of the subject of this sketch; Mary E. born Jan. 2, 1861, married Peter Dowling; James Lawrence, born Aug. 12, 1863, died Sept. 10, 1904, was the husband of Laura Brown, and they had three children, Mary G., Laura E. and Ellen M.; and John Henry, twin brother of James Lawrence, married Loretta Fisher and they had two children, Peter H. and Mary G.
    Frank T. Carney attended the public schools of Johnstown and when a young man entered the employ of the Cambria Iron Works, with whom he was connected until the great flood of 1889. On Sept. 16, 1890, he was appointed a member of the police force by Mayor Rose, Johnstown's first mayor. Ten years later he resigned his position to accept the superintendency of the police and fire departments of the Cambria Iron Works, an office which he filled with marked ability. He had an enviable reputation for faithfulness to the interests of his employers and conscientious discharge of his manifold duties. Mr. Carney was a stanch Democrat and a member of the Catholic Church. He was married Jan. 12, 1897, to Miss Mary McNeelis, the daughter of Edward and Ann (McCool) McNeelis, both of Irish descent. To them were born four sons: Francis T., the subject of this sketch; Dr. John R., born Jan. 27, 1901, a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, engaged in the practice of dentistry in Johnstown; Charles J., born May 29, 1903, and James L., born Sept. 19, 1905, both students at the University of Pittsburgh. Mr. Carney died July 20, 1924, and his wife died May 16, 1920. They are buried in St. John's Cemetery, Geistown.
    Francis T. Carney attended the public schools of Johnstown and was graduated from St. Francis College, Loretta, Pa., in 1916. He also attended the University of Pennsylvania and was graduated from Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, in 1924. The following year was spent as an interne in Windber Hospital, and on Sept. 10, 1925, Doctor Carney engaged in practice in Johnstown, with offices at 418 Lincoln Street. During the World War he enlisted in the Officers Training Corps at Philadelphia, in August, 1918, and was discharged in December of that year.
    Doctor Carney is identified with the Cambria County Medical Society, Pennsylvania State Medical Society and the American Medical Association. He is a member of the American Legion, Kappa Sigma, Nu Sigma
