Nu and Alpha Omega Alpha fraternities. Doctor Carney is an enterprising young man whose success in life is already assured. George C. Rutledge, assistant treasurer of the Johnstown Trust Company, ranks among the successful young business men of Johnstown. He was born in this city, April 18, 1894, and is a son of James D. and Fanny (Williams) Rutledge. James D. Rutledge, of J.D. Rutledge & Sons, wholesale produce, is prominently identified with the business interests of this city. He was born at Livermore, Derry Township, Westmoreland County, Pa., Jan. 17, 1866, a son of George and Henrietta (Ferguson) Rutledge. James D. Rutledge's education was received in the public schools of his native township, and at the age of 15 years he came to Johnstown with his parents and obtained a position in the grocery store of ex-Sheriff John Ryan, remaining there for eight years. After the flood of May 31, 1889, he leased the ground where the store of John Ryan had been standing, and started in business for himself. Shortly afterward he entered into a partnership with Mr. Ryan, and the firm was thereafter known as Ryan & Rutledge. At the end of two years he sold his interest to Mr. Ryan, and again commenced business for himself, this time at the corner of Market and Locust streets, remaining until the fall of 1905, when he abandoned this in order to accept the general managership of the Johnstown Grocery Company. He is a Republican and a member of the Presbyterian Church. He is a member of Johnstown Lodge, No. 157, Knights of Pythias, and of Orient Lodge, United Order of American Mechanics. He was married September, 1892, to Miss Fanny Williams, who was one of eight children: Annie, John C., William R., Lenora, Millie, Agnes, Alice and Fanny. The children of James D. and Fanny (Williams) Rutledge are: George, the subject of this sketch; Robert, born June 30 1897; and Frances, born Aug. 9, 1901. George C. Rutledge was educated in the public schools of Johnstown and graduated from the Johnstown High School in 1911. He began his business career as teller in the U.S. National Bank. In 1913 he went with the Johnstown Trust Company as teller, where he remained one year, and in 1914 was associated in business with his father, the J. D. Rutledge & Sons, wholesale produce.
